(Editors' Note: IPVanish is owned by Ziff Davis, PCMag's parent company.) Some VPNs are abandoning limitations on simultaneous connections altogether, including Atlas VPN, Avira Phantom VPN, IPVanish VPN, Private Internet Access VPN, and Editors' Choice winners Surfshark VPN and TunnelBear VPN. We should note that although IVPN offers more than the average simultaneous connections, that's increasingly less important. We recommend new customers start with the shortest, cheapest plan for any VPN so they can try it before committing to a longer, cost-saving plan. In that light, the IVPN Pro plan is just under average for monthly costs, but it doesn't discount its longer-term plans as heavily as others do. The average monthly price of a VPN we've reviewed is $9.84, and the average annual cost is $66.28. While it's the company's priciest tier, it still compares favorably with the competition. The industry average for simultaneous VPN connections is five, so we used the Pro plan in our testing. A Pro plan goes for $4 per week, $10 per month, $100 every year, $160 every two years, or $220 every three years. The Pro plan raises the device cap to seven licenses, unlocks port forwarding, and grants access to multi-hop connections (more on this later). Standard allows just two devices to be connected simultaneously. The Standard plan costs $2 per week, $6 per month, $60 per year, $100 every two years, and $140 every three years. IVPN offers two tiers: IVPN Standard and IVPN Pro. It also allows customers to find the right price for their budget. Its subscription system does reserve some features for more expensive tiers-which we normally don't like-but even those plans are affordable. IVPN's pricing is all about flexibility, in terms of both lengths of contracts and features. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.Click on the right-most tab, which is called “Sharing. Right-click on the connection, choose “Properties,” and a new window will appear. In this case, we have IVPN installed, and the connection is called “IVPN-TAP-Windows Adapter.” With that done, scroll down till you see a heading called “Related settings.” There, click on “Change adapter options.”įrom here on, the steps are the same as in the previous section: you need to find the VPN connection, which is usually named after your VPN’s name and will have the words “TAP adapter” in it. If this is your first time using the hotspot, make sure to set the “Share My Internet Connection Over” toggle to Wi-Fi and to create a good username and secure password for the hotspot (for obvious reasons, the password was blanked out in this picture). To find it, go to “Settings” and then to “Network & Internet.” The entry for the mobile hotspot is fairly low on the list to the left, select it, and turn it on. This didn’t exist before Windows 10, which is why it won’t work on older versions. We’re going to create the virtual VPN router through the mobile hotspot functionality in Windows. It’s just run through the router, not the device itself. As a corollary, this also means that devices that normally can’t install VPN software can use it, too. The main benefit of using a VPN router is that the entire network enjoys the protection of a virtual private network without having to install the software on each and every device. A VPN router is nothing more than one of these devices with VPN software installed. Even if you’re connected by wire instead, chances are the cable leads back to a router. What Is a VPN Router?Ĭhances are that right now, you’re connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi router, a small device either you bought or your internet service provider installed, which beams the internet through your house or office. If you want to save some money, though, you’ll be happy to know you can turn your Windows machine into one in just a few steps. If you want to install a VPN on a device that doesn’t allow it, like a smart TV or even a printer, the simplest way to get around that problem is to use a VPN router. Traffic from other devices will be tunneled through your Windows PC's internet connection. You will need to enable sharing for the VPN adapter, too. You can use Ethernet or Wi-Fi to connect to share your PC's internet connection with other devices.
